glycolic_serum_17_webSkin Care Tip of the Day: Large pores are an indication of how much oil you produced when you were in your teens—the formative years for your pore size. When your skin rapidly pumped out the oil, the walls of the pore stretched wider resulting in larger pores. For those who were very oily all over the face (genetics), their pores will be larger everywhere, while those that produced oil only in the t-zone, their larger pores are confined to that area. And for those that barely produced oil, their pores still remain small to this day.

My pores seem to be getting larger the older I get?

Many people might also complain about their pores appearing larger as they get older. They aren’t getting larger, but they can appear larger. Why? When your skin is young and the skin is tight, large pores (which are essentially small indents in the skin caused from oil production in your teenage years) won’t be very noticeable. As you get older, due to gravity and the weakening of the elastin fibers within the skin, the pores appear larger because they indent further into the skin since the skin is no longer pulled back as tight.

What can you do to make the pores appear smaller? …

The best way to reduce the appearance of large pores is to exfoliate often. By using a combination of both physical exfoliants (facial scrubs with round grains) and chemical exfoliants (like alcohol-free glycolic serums) on a regular basis, this will help remove surface dry cells so the opening of the pores are less deep making them look smaller. Chemical exfoliants also get into the pores and help to keep them cleaned out.
