Do You Have Smoker’s Lines, But You’ve Never Smoked?

Renee Rouleau's revitalizing ginseng toner

I’ve encountered many clients throughout the years that have what are called ‘smoker’s lines’ (deep wrinkles, fine wrinkles) around the mouth, but have never smoked a day in their life.  The truth of the matter is, while smoking is the most well known reason for this type of wrinkling, it can also develop due to your skin type and thinness, and from everyday facial expressions.  What can be done?

If you have thinner skin (most commonly found in fair skins), you will be more prone to developing smoker’s lines.  If you find you purse your lips, or drink out of straws, these are the first habits to break.

New routines you can put in place are:

-Make sure to apply sunscreen daily on your face and around the mouth. (The #1 cause of premature skin aging is sun exposure. Try our Daily Protection SPF 30)

-Use at home skin peels, which encourage collagen growth and improves texture.

– Get professional treatments.  Professional strength spa products, chemical peels and laser treatments will give you more effective results.

If your lines are deep, Botox® Cosmetic and Restylane can make lines less noticeable for a few months.  If Botox® or fillers isn’t your thing, use an ingredient like Hyaluronic Acid filling spheres, which plumps the skin surface by drawing moisture to temporarily fill out surface lines.

While lines around the mouth can be very frustrating, these are all effective options to preventing or lessening lines around the mouth, even if you are genetically prone to getting them.
