Five Skin Care Tips to Reduce Acne, Cysts and Blemishes

It is challenging to deal with blemishes, breakouts and cystic acne. Although there is no cure for acne, these five skin care tips will help to promote healthier, clearer, and even-toned skin.

Skin Tip #1: Don’t over-dry your skin with harsh cleansers and alcohol-based toners. Most cleansers and toners, formulated for problem skin, are designed to dry out breakouts and so they contain strong detergents and alcohols. Drying out infected breakouts where active blemishes are present may be helpful for destroying acne-causing bacteria, but the harsh ingredients will dehydrate non-broken out areas resulting in dry skin cell buildup. This layer of dehydrated skin cells will trap oil and acne-causing bacteria under the skin, which will ultimately cause an increase in breakouts–the last thing your skin needs! Be sure to purchase cleansers that are labeled ‘sulfate-free’ and avoid the ingredients Sodium Laureth (or Lauryl), Sulfate, and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. These ingredients can be extremely dehydrating to the skin. See our collection of gentle, sulfate-free cleansing gels and cleansing lotionsRead more

Heal Blemishes While Wearing Makeup!

For those who get blemishes (just about everyone, right), you want it to go away–fast. Most blemish spot treatments formulated to speed up the healing process are meant to be used at night and/or aren’t compatible under daytime makeup. Our Daytime Blemish Gel is specifically formulated for use under makeup to encourage a quick recovery for  blemishes.

The product: Daytime Blemish Gel is used during the day when makeup is worn and exposure to environmental pollutants is high to provide an invisible “seal” to prevent dirt and debris from getting into the blemish openings, while assisting in a faster recovery. Blemishes be gone!

Do You Get Pimples or Blackheads in Your Ears?

I know this may be a unpleasant topic of conversation for some of you, but many people do experience blemishes in their ears, so I will address this issue. Acne cysts are generally the type of blemish that will materialize in the ear. These blemishes are hard to the touch, painful and form deep within the skin. Cystic blemishes can linger for weeks but because they are so deeply rooted beneath the skin’s surface, you must not touch or squeeze them.  If you leave the cyst alone, time will heal the pesky imperfection but if you give into temptation and pick at it, I assure you, the only noticeable transformation will be the level of pain your blemish causes. Because they do not come to a whitehead like most pimples, a cystic blemish will become very painful if you disrupt it. One way to expedite the healing process without causing any counterproductive side effects is to dab on our Anti- Cyst Treatment (a treatment for reducing cystic acne) in the morning and at night. With this application, you will significantly decrease the inflammation while accelerating the healing process.

The next lovely subject at hand—ear blackheads. A significant number of people find that they have blackheads in their ears but they most commonly appear in men’s ears. Blackheads in the ears can be virtually impossible to extract on your own so it is best to see your skin care professional to remove them. He or she should remove the blackheads using a metal extractor, however, not all spas and skin care centers perform this procedure. Be sure to call ahead of time to inquire whether or not the particular center practices this type of extraction… Read more

Are Antibiotics Necessary for Treating Acne?

For many years, treating acne with prescription oral antibiotics was the standard protocol to reduce blemishes. One would go to the doctor and walk away with a prescription in hopes of clearer skin. While antibiotics can be extremely effective and there are certainly times when they are necessary, I believe that antibiotics can often act as a ‘band-aid’ to give short-term relief. When going off the medication, many find they are right back where they started with.

With all of the advancements in skin care ingredients, oral prescriptions aren’t the only option for achieving clearer, blemish-free skin. Read why dairy may be causing cystic acne breakouts. I personally believe all options should be explored before having to resort to taking pills, and I believe many others feel this way too.

If you’re battling with severe acne breakouts, I suggest you consult with:

-a licensed esthetician to discuss options for topical skin care products and professional treatments such as chemical peels and facials (AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel was awarded “Best Cleanser for Oily/Problem Skin by Allure Magazine)

-a dermatologist to discuss medical options

-a gynecologist to look at possible hormonal issues, for those with adult acne

There are many options available for getting clearer skin and there is no right or wrong answer, it’s important to do research and get all the facts to determine what the best option is for you. Your body is yours and you have the freedom to decide what goes in it and on it… Read more
