Skin Care Tip: You may be surprised to know that approximately 30% of aging is genetics and 70% is up to you.

This is really good news because it tells us that YOU have a say in the matter of how your skin will age!

One of many studies that I have seen proving this theory is on identical twins. Two sisters, who would under normal circumstances, age exactly the same. But in this case, one sister was a heavy smoker and a tennis coach who had spent a lot of time out in the sun. The other sister was a non-smoker and had an indoor job most of her life. The smoking sister looked easily fifteen years older because of the years of smoking and sun damage. So lifestyle choices really do matter.

So in the case of looking at your mother’s skin, you can certainly have many similarities; dark circles and “bags” under the eyes, freckles, redness/sensitivity—ALL which are genetic. As for lines and wrinkles, the #1 reason why you’ll ever get those is from sun exposure—NOT genetics. I have a great A-Z Guide to Anti-Aging that I wrote that is worth reading…

Bottom line: Observing how your mother’s skin ages can be a good predictor, but genetics isn’t everything. Practicing good skin care habits and daily SPF are what really make the difference in the appearance of your skin.
