Why Your Skin Can Smell During the Summer

Did you know that after spending a day in the sun, the skin will take on a rancid smell because the sun oxidizes the lipids (oils) in the skin? As if there weren’t already enough bad side effects from the sun–wrinkles, brown spots, skin damage, but now this! Yet another reason to stay out of the sun–you don’t want to smell bad!

How to Apply Sunscreen to the Face and Neck

Knowing that a sunscreen moisturizer is the number one BEST anti-aging product in the world when worn every single day of the year, rain or shine, inside or out, (because damaging UV rays do penetrate through windows in your home or office), it is really important to make sure that you apply it the correct way. Add in that the SPF number isn’t necessarily a guarantee of proper protection, but rather how generously you apply it, here is my recommendation for proper application of your daily sunscreen moisturizer.

How to apply sunscreen:

Step 1: After applying your toner and skin serum, take a quarter size amount of sunscreen and first apply it to the neck area. (If you’re wearing a bathrobe, you’ll want to remove it because the collar will interfere with proper application on the sides of the neck.)

Step 2: When applying to the neck, apply in upward strokes to the front of the neck, and then, working sideways, apply to the sides of the neck, all the way to the hairline in the back of your head. This will ensure that you are covering the area well… Read more

My Five Favorite Tips for Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

The #1 reason why the skin shows signs of premature aging is due to sun/UV exposure, since the UV rays destroys collagen, create inflammation and negatively alter the DNA of your skin cells. As a skin care expert and esthetician, I am pretty fanatical about avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun and UV light. While some of these practices may seem a little extreme to you, they are tips that I live and swear by.

Sun Protection Tip #1: Beware of daylight coming through windows.

There is a belief that the only time you get sun exposure (and therefore sun damage) is when you are outside. I’m here to say that this is just not true. UV light (that damages your skin) can penetrate windows at any daylight hour. For example, my bedroom has big windows all around it, so I always wake to sunlight (or just daylight on cloudy days) coming through. The moment I wake up, I immediately cover my face with my sheets until I’m ready to get out of bed, since I’m not wearing sunscreen. Crazy I know, but every minute counts when it comes to skin protection and as someone who is in a profession where having good skin matters, I take it very seriously. I also have shades on the window in my office to filter out daylight during my working hours… Read more

Are You Getting the Best Benefits From Your Anti-Aging Products?

For many people over the age of 30, incorporating in anti-aging eye creams, serums, and moisturizers and masks is considered to be an important part of a skin care routine. Add in Botox, fillers, chemical peels, facials, and other age-erasing procedures and one would assume that they’ve got their skin’s anti-aging needs covered, right?

Well, not exactly. While these are all essential in the quest for smoother, younger looking skin, you must realize that the best anti-aging products and treatments are useless if you’re not protecting your skin from daily UV exposure. Without protecting your skin from sunlight’s damaging rays, all the benefits of your treatments and products you are using can be canceled out. Find a good moisturizer that contains a minimum of SPF 15 (I love our Daily Protection SPF 30) and apply it generously and wear it faithfully every day. So now your anti-aging products and treatments can work their magic.

Easy Sun Protection for the Hands

Since the #1 cause of premature skin aging (wrinkles, rough texture, brown spots) is exposure to the sun and its damaging UV rays, wearing sun protection is essential for all exposed areas.

One area that is often forgotten is the hands. They certainly show the signs of aging and take a lot of abuse with hand washing and the use of drying hand sanitizers, but they need to be protected to look their best and to lessen the risk of skin cancer.

The challenge with wearing sunscreen daily on the hands is that it comes off every time you wash your hands, and having to reapply can be an inconvenience… Read more
