Renée Rouleau Shares Her Own Personal Skin Sins

Let me start by saying that even though I grew up in the beauty business (my grandmother owned a hair salon) and jumped right into the skin care industry after graduating high school, just like everyone, I too have had my share of skin sins.

During my high school years, I worked at a drugstore where suntan lamps were sold. Forever wanting to get away from being so ghostly pale, I gladly embraced the lamp in hopes of getting a deep dark tan. As anyone with fair skin knows, this is a difficult accomplishment. Sun tan lamps make for terrible sunburns. Ouch.

I also smoked cigarettes as a teenager, and for a time after high school. I gave it up for a New Year’s resolution one year and never touched them again. When I go back to France to visit my husband’s family, I’m around a lot of smoke there, but I don’t consider a bit of second-hand smoke for two weeks a year a big deal. Some skin experts may disagree, but I’m not going to sweat the small stuff. (Read my French Skin Care Investigation)… Read more

Is the Airplane Giving Your Skin Trouble?

The cabins of airplanes have extremely low humidity, which cause the skin to get extremely dehydrated (lack of water). The dry air looks for moisture where it can get it, and that means robbing it right from your skin!

Dry skin will become drier, but did you know that oily skin gets even oilier during flying? When the skin has no water, it attempts to compensate for the dehydration by producing more oil—which is the last thing that oily skin needs. For dry skins that have no oil glands, the skin will be depleted of its water content.

Bottom line: Airplanes can wreak havoc on the skin!

Here are helpful tips before, during and after flight to keep your skin healthy and balanced: … Read more

What Age Should I Start Using Anti-Aging Products?

Anti-aging products (particularly those with antioxidants) can start to be used as early as age 21.

But here is the important part: Choose anti-aging products appropriate for your skin type. Many cosmetic companies (not Renée Rouleau, of course) assume those who want anti-aging care must have dry skin. But our skin care spas are visited every day by young women and men who still have oil and breakouts, but want to preserve their youthful appearance for as long as they can.

Here’s a list of anti-aging ingredients that are appropriate for those in their 20’s.

Hyaluronic Acid (You’ll love it in our Skin Drink)

Stabilized Vitamin C (You’ll love it in our Vitamin C&E Complex)

Elderberry Fruit Extract (You’ll love it in our Elderberry Toner)

Zinc Oxide (You’ll love it in our Daily Protection SPF 30) … Read more

True or False? Steaming the Skin Helps to Open Your Pores

When you steam your skin at home, or have it steamed in a professional facial, many people think the pores open up and they can get cleaned out easier. This is false. Pores aren’t like doors, they don’t open and close.

But steam is beneficial in two ways.

-The heat that the steam produces will raise the temperature of the skin, therefore softening the hardened oil in the pore for easier extraction and deep pore cleansing. (In all of the Renée Rouleau facials, we use special skin softening treatments along with steam to ensure the pores get properly softened for manual extractions—without leaving you red afterward.)… Read more

Dark Circles? Our Vitamin C Eye Serum to the Rescue!

We were very honored to have our Vitamin C Serum featured in Real Simple Magazine in a story talking about solutions to dark circles.

Our Vitamin C Eye Serum is an age-defying eye treatment formulated with time-released, no-sting Vitamin C (Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate) to repair sun damage, brighten, smooth and hydrate the delicate eye area. This unique blend of ingredients sends moisture deep into the skin surface, yet is so lightweight it won’t weigh down the fragile eye area, cause makeup to run, or seep into the eyes causing unnecessary puffiness. It leaves skin feeling noticeably silky smooth and more resilient.

What exactly are dark circles?

Darkness under the eye area is because the skin is extra thin, allowing the blood vessels to show from under the skin.  The most common reason for thinning in this area is long-term, overuse of Retinol products, genetics and/or loss of collagen and “plumpness” from aging.  Some people can also have deep inset bone structure that can cause a shadow under the eye, making darkness appear. Also, some people can get what is referred to as “leaky vessels” as they age. This is when the blood leaks from the capillaries and can cause under eye darkness because of the excessive blood… Read more
