Avoid Cleansers With Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate—Too Drying

skincaretips_beautifulskinSkin Care Tip of the Day: If the skin feels tight after washing, chances are it contains sulfates. What are sulfates? They are detergents commonly used in foaming and gel cleansers that companies feel is effective in cleaning the skin. But Ammonium or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate are just too drying to the skin. If your skin feels tight after washing, it is a sign that the skin has been stripped of all its water, therefore causing surface dead skin cell build up. Then you have to rush and put your moisturizer on to put back the moisture that you just took out—which makes absolutely no sense! Cleansers that bubble up and lather a lot like a shampoo usually contain sulfates and will leave your skin feeling tight… Read more

Avoid Dairy Products if You are Prone to Acne Cysts

anti-cyst_treatmentSkin Care Tip of the Day: Avoid dairy products if you are prone to acne cysts. Dairy can cause breakouts? Yes, it certainly could be the culprit. When you develop cystic breakouts (those hard, painful, underground blemishes that linger for weeks) on the chin, jaw line and neck area it might be a sign that you’re getting more dairy in your diet than your body can tolerate. Your skin acts as an excretory system to get rid of things that your body is not in agreement with, so when you get too much dairy (and since dairy is naturally harder to digest) it comes out in the form of cystic blemishes in the lower area of the face.

The best way to determine if your acne cysts are directly related to your intake of dairy is to completely cut dairy out of your diet for two weeks. If you don’t develop any new cysts and you normally would have by now, then this might solve your problem! It doesn’t mean that you cannot eat any dairy at all, you would then start to slowly introduce dairy back into your diet and if you start breaking out again, that’s your body’s tolerance level.

For cystic acne, you really only three options available… Read more

Does SPF 30 Protect Your Skin Twice as Much as SPF 15?

skincaretips_beautifulskinSkin Care Tip of the Day: Does SPF 30 protect your skin twice as much as SPF 15? Did you know that an SPF 30 offers only 4% more sun protection than an SPF 15? And an SPF 45 offers only 2% more than an SPF 30. And the higher up you go, that percentage lessens. The real secret to protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is to reapply often and generously—it’s really not the SPF number that matters.

A minimum of SPF 15 worn every day, rain or shine, inside or out, is an absolute must to keep sun damage to a minimum. If you’re hesitant to use sunscreen because they feel to heavy on the skin or have caused break outs, you just haven’t found the right one yet. For oily skins, look for sunscreens formulated with a minimum of 6% Zinc Oxide to ensure a lightweight texture that won’t cause acne.

Renée Rouleau Daily Protection SPF 30 is our #1 best-selling product because it’s so lightweight and won’t clog the pores like many sunscreens can.

Exfoliation Will Give You Beautiful Skin

Skin Care Tip of the Day: By removing dry skin cells, you reveal healthy and vibrant skin. When caring for your skin, the phrase “out with the old, in with the new” really holds true. Exfoliation removes expired, dry skin cells making way for new, healthy, plump skin cells. It also helps to reduce blemishes and break outs, lessen clogged pores, rid the skin of dryness and lighten brown spots and hyperpigmentation—all while smoothing the skin.

How often should you exfoliate? There are two types of exfoliants. First, a “chemical” or “acid” exfoliant does the work for you. You apply it, leave it on the skin, and it works to dissolve the dry skin cells. These exfoliants include ingredients such as Glycolic Acid, AHA’s and BHA’s, and enzymes such as Pumpkin, Papaya, and Pineapple. Try Renée Rouleau Glycolic Serum 10%, 17%, or 20%, Pumpkin Smoothing Peel or Triple Berry Smoothing Peel. Second, a “physical” exfoliant means that you have to do the work. These exfoliants include facial brushes, sponges, and facial scrubs. Try Renée Rouleau Mint Buffing Beads, Micro Crystal Cream, or Facial Brush. A combination of both physical and chemical exfoliants will give your skin the best results… Read more

Looking shiny? Blot, Blot, Blot Your Skin

skincaretips_beautifulskinSkin Care Tip of the Day: Looking shiny? Blot, blot, blot your skin. I’m often asked “how can I get my skin to be less oily?” And the best answer I can give is to blot your skin to absorb excess oil. There are mattifying products, like Renée Rouleau Matte Moisture which can be helpful. But absolutely making your skin not secrete oil is impossible, nor would it be healthy to try and do so… Read more
