Skin Care Tips For Teens by Celebrity Esthetician, Renée Rouleau

Due to hormonal changes, it is common for many teenagers to struggle with the various types of acne. Cysts, pustules, papules, blackheads and more can take a toll on teens’ self-confidence. Whether or not teenage skin has acne, it is still really important to start young with good skin care habits.

Schedule a professional facial.

Hands down, one of the best skin care tips for teenagers is to put your skin in the hands of a professional esthetician. As many mothers can attest, teenagers often tune out their mothers, but they will pay attention to a professional. The benefits of a professional facial are many; professional analysis to determine the needs of the skin type, deep cleansing to clear clogged pores, expert advice with recommendations for a good home care routine, proper skin education offering tips and tricks on skincare, as well as tips for diet and lifestyle.

Renée Rouleau Skin Care Spas offer a Teen Facial for $75.00. Contact us to schedule an appointment.

A professional facial is a good place to start. If the esthetician feels that the teenager would benefit from seeing a dermatologist and getting on prescription medication, then they will recommend so. This path may not always be the best choice, as sometimes parents (including estheticians) may feel that medication might be prescribed too early… Read more

Five Skin Care Tips to Reduce Acne, Cysts and Blemishes

It is challenging to deal with blemishes, breakouts and cystic acne. Although there is no cure for acne, these five skin care tips will help to promote healthier, clearer, and even-toned skin.

Skin Tip #1: Don’t over-dry your skin with harsh cleansers and alcohol-based toners. Most cleansers and toners, formulated for problem skin, are designed to dry out breakouts and so they contain strong detergents and alcohols. Drying out infected breakouts where active blemishes are present may be helpful for destroying acne-causing bacteria, but the harsh ingredients will dehydrate non-broken out areas resulting in dry skin cell buildup. This layer of dehydrated skin cells will trap oil and acne-causing bacteria under the skin, which will ultimately cause an increase in breakouts–the last thing your skin needs! Be sure to purchase cleansers that are labeled ‘sulfate-free’ and avoid the ingredients Sodium Laureth (or Lauryl), Sulfate, and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. These ingredients can be extremely dehydrating to the skin. See our collection of gentle, sulfate-free cleansing gels and cleansing lotionsRead more

Five Winter Skin Tips from Skin Care Expert, Renée Rouleau

There is no question that the cold air wreaks havoc on our skin and for many, dryness is a huge concern. In anticipation of the cold temperature outside and the dry heat indoors, here are some precautionary steps to take to prepare your skin for the cold front!

#1 Reanalyze your current routine:

How do we know when it’s time to change up our daily skin routine? The key is to really listen to your skin. If your skin doesn’t feel comfortable then a product is not working how it’s meant to. It’s time for a change! Does your skin feel tight? Is your skin experience excessive flaking? Are you producing more oil than normal? (Yes, dehydration increases oil within the skin. Read more about reducing oil production.) If the products aren’t working anymore, your skin will let you know. See our nine skin types for product recommendations or email us for expert advice.

#2 Be sure to perform your night time routine:

When the heat is on at night that means your skin has dry air blowing on it for about seven hours or more while you sleep. The dry air looks for moisture wherever it can get it and that means taking it from your skin. This makes your night time skin care routine crucial in the winter so you can prevent unnecessary dryness.

Do this by using a nighttime moisturizer (any moisturizer without SPF) that is appropriate for your skin type… Read more

New Years’ Skin Resolution #3: Don’t Pick at Your Skin

There are generally two reason why people will pick at their skin.

1. Nervous Habit. Many people don’t even realize they are picking at their skin.  For example, while driving in the car or talking on the phone, they just scratch and pick at anything and just can’t keep their hands off their face.

Solution: Keep your hands occupied. Get any kind of toy or gadget that you can play with in your hands at times when you are most likely to be touching your skin. This will help tremendously. I personally love Tangle toys. The small version is great and fun to fidget with to keep your hands busy.

2. Picking at a blemish in an attempt to make it go away faster. You have to realize that although you can’t always control breakouts from appearing, you CAN control what happens when you get the breakout. The truth of the matter is, a blemish usually lasts 5-7 days, but the red or dark scar from picking at the blemish, can linger for weeks— or even months… Read more
