Facial Etiquette: Seven Things to Know Before You Go

Particularly for those who have never had a professional facial treatment before, you may not know what to expect. Here are some helpful tips to prepare for the best facial experience.

Tip #1) Avoid using exfoliating products at least four days before your facial.

Since most facial treatments in the U.S. include an exfoliating treatment such as an enzyme or acid peel or ultrasonic exfoliation, you don’t want to over-sensitize your skin. You should avoid using any scrubs, acids, or retinol products beforehand. Note: if your skin is sunburned or any irritation is present, you should reschedule for a later time.

LeSpa in Los Angeles Welcomes Celebrity Esthetician Renée Rouleau

I recently returned from my first visit to L.A. where I gave facials and skin consultations for four days at LeSpa in the beautiful Hotel Sofitel. (Located at Beverly and La Cienega.)

To give you the back-story on how this came to be, I wanted to have a presence in Los Angeles because I have many clients who live there that have facial treatments with me when they are in Dallas (and some even fly out to Dallas just for their facial) so the demand for me being in L.A. was there. However, I didn’t want to open up a new location simply because I don’t live there. So I have partnered with LeSpa at Hotel Sofitel to be able use one of their private VIP facial rooms, several times a year for my clients. Some of my visits will be before awards shows to ensure my celebrity clients have glowing skin for their red carpet appearances.

My first visit was absolutely fabulous. It was really fun to use another facility as I got a lot of great ideas to bring back to my own Dallas and Plano skin care spas. LeSpa is a beautiful spa with very talented massage therapists and estheticians. (I was able to find some time for my own pampering and had an amazing massage with Nicole)… Read more

How to Give Your Skin a Facial

Due to busy schedules, financial constraints, or simply location, many people don’t get regular, professional facial treatments for their skin. While I highly suggest getting a professional facial at least every change of season, there are certainly ways that you can mimic some of the results at home. Here’s my four-step treatment for complexion perfection.

Step 1: Cleanse the skin with a mild, sulfate-free cleansing gel like Luxe Mint Cleansing Gel or lightweight cleansing lotion or Rosemary Mint Cleanser to remove makeup, oil, and bacteria.

Step 2: Use either a mild facial scrub with round grains like Mint Buffing Beads or Micro Crystal Cream massaging over the skin in circular motions for 60 seconds and rinsing off well, or use an acid-based exfoliation (such as Triple Berry Smoothing Peel) left on the skin for 7-10 minutes and rinse off well. Both of these are designed to remove surface dry skin cells so that a mask can work deeper within the skin… Read more

Five Esthetician Rules I Live By

As an esthetician who likes both to give and receive facials, I have a very good awareness of the do’s and don’ts needed to have a successful career in esthetics. When I travel to different cities for my appearances, I schedule facials incognito, because as part of my own personal ongoing education, it’s important to be aware of what it feels like to be in my client’s shoes. Through the years, I’ve had many great experiences, and some not-so-great, so I’ve comprised my own list of esthetician rules that I believe ensure a pleasant experience. As I know many fellow estheticians read my blog, I hope you practice these as well.

1. Never chew gum and always have good breath

To maintain a professional appearance, I never chew gum when working with a client, opting for breath mints instead. I’ve also made it a rule that I do not eat garlic the night before I will be working on facial clients to avoid any strong orders (and I never eat tuna fish sandwiches on my lunch break in between clients). When working with clients, my face is literally just inches from theirs so it’s really important to have fresh breath… Read more
