This past year, I’ve made two trips to Los Angeles to give skin treatments to celebrity clients at Le Spa at the Hotel Sofitel. On both of my visits, I’ve had the pleasure to give a facial to the very lovely and beautiful Hollywood actress, Maria Canals-Barrera. (We met on Twitter! Follow Maria on Twitter)

I honestly have to say that in my 25 years of working with skin, Maria has one of the most beautiful skins I have ever worked with. Why? Simply because at the young of age 45, Maria has all the traits that make her look younger than her age. Plump and firm skin, high prominent cheekbones, a strong neckline, tiny pores and a flawless, smooth texture. (Read more about aging skin: What I Know For Sure About Skin) So on my recent visit, I asked Maria if she would share her favorite skin tips and products for my readers.

Can you share your skin tips that you swear by? Cleanliness is always a priority for me, followed by consistent hydration. I always wash morning and night with a gentle, yet foaming cleanser. (I feel most clean with those.) I blot with clean blotting cloths to absorb oil during the day (especially, right before an interview or an audition) and try to avoid using my hands on my face. Since we touch all kinds of things like public doorknobs, elevator buttons, telephones, etc…our hands can get quite grimy without us even realizing it!

I am also faithful in protecting the skin under my eyes with eye cream EVERY night. I’ve been faithful in doing this for YEARS!…

Did your mother or grandmother give you advice on how to care for your skin? Did you practice it?

Oh, yes. The cleanliness advice was straight from my mom. Both she and my father have beautiful skin. And although good skin can be genetic, it can also be damaged by not taking care of it! So, I do.

My mom is a beautiful Cuban woman who won a beauty pageant when she was young. She was “Queen of the Carnival” in Holguin, Cuba in 1957. She would tell us to NEVER go to sleep with make-up on. When I got the Chicken Pox as an early teen, she said, “Don’t scratch your face! It’ll leave a hole!”

Also, I remember when we’d go to the beach as kids, my mom would lay out, tanning only her baby oil soaked body. On her face, would be a thick white towel completely covering it. She would lift that towel only to sit up (every 10 minutes or so) to cry out, “Get out of the deep end!” And then she’d lay back down again. Hahaha!

So, I learned to really protect my face from direct sun exposure from her. Not that I followed suit right away…I remember playing all day in that Florida sun as a kid with NO sunscreen on, but as I grew up, like in High School, I began to take better care of it. I’ll get sun on my face by daily activities and playing outside with my kids, but not from laying out and frying it in the sun at the beach or poolside.

I often wear a hat and glasses to protect my skin from direct sun when I walk to school to pick up my kids. The other moms think I’m “glamorous” by wearing my fabulous hats, but I tell them, “Really, I’m just protecting my face.” Hahaha! Oh, and my mom always preached on not over plucking my eyebrows!

What kind of skin advice do share with your own daughters? They are young. 8 & 6. I use a baby wipe every morning to clean the oil off their face and I apply sunscreen on them before school. At night I make sure they wash their gorgeous faces in the bath with a natural cleanser.

Do you do anything different to your skin now that you didn’t do in the last decade? Thanks to Renée Rouleau, I am more aware about the necessity of sunscreen at ALL times! I didn’t know we need it in the shade! I thought I only needed protection from DIRECT sunlight. This was a big eye opener for me. Even in winter on a cold day, I need sunscreen? Yes! I am also, exfoliating more often now. Around 2- 3 times a week.

What is your age? I will be 45 tomorrow. Yikes! But I do like my skin and I’m grateful for all the great products available to protect it and help keep it looking good.

What are some general tips and tricks you practice to look your best? I enjoy make-up and the artistry of it. I did take a few make-up classes and enjoy seeing how one can play up “positive” features (eyes, lips) and contour less “positive” ones (a large forehead, double chin) and it’s fascinating. I also learned how beautifully prepped skin is essential before applying make up. Your skin is your “canvas.” I learned the importance of the eyebrow and how it frames the face.

And of course, a good night’s sleep does so much for the complexion. I try my best to do that!

Have you learned skin advice or tips from Renée Rouleau that you do faithfully?

Oh, yes. The tip about using a Vitamin C&E Serum under our sunscreen helping to activate it. That’s a great one. And the benefits of SPF-infused mineral powder as a sunscreen (I used that one while I was camping with the family in Texas!) Also, I gotta stop sleeping on my face if I want to look good in 10yrs. Renée says it aids in bringing on more wrinkles. Yikes! Also, I am learning to protect my hands from the sun while driving by dabbing sunscreen on them, too! (I read Renée’s skin tips on her Twitter page.)

Which Renée Rouleau products are you loving and why?

I love the exfoliating power and natural properties of Renee Rouleau’s Triple Berry Smoothing Peel. It’s fragrant and crimson red with seeds in it. I have to fight the temptation to stick a spoon in it and eat it! Hahaha

How do you prepare your skin for the red carpet?

I ALWAYS exfoliate the day of and immediately follow with a LIGHT moisturizer…because I now always wear sunscreen before every Red Hot Carpet. They’re usually held outdoors!

Thank you Maria for sharing your words of skin wisdom with my readers! xo

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Beyond Beauty Paris trade show (also referred to as Paris Beauty Week), a three day conference with 22,000 attendees dedicated to the newest technologies and most innovative ingredients in skin care, as well as emerging trends in European spas. A trade show that’s right up my alley! My husband is from France, so I tacked this on to a trip to spend time with his family. (Rouleau is actually my French maiden name; I have a French married name as well.)

As someone who attends trade shows frequently in the U.S., it’s always interesting to be able to travel to a different country and observe what is going in another market in regards to beauty.

Here are some of my observations…

Wine, cheese, and baguettes

Normally at the U.S. trade shows, a handful of vendors exhibiting will have a small dish of candy to lure people into coming into their booths. But at Paris Beauty Week, people actually had tables set up serving wine, cheese (fromage) and baguettes. (Count me in!) What a wonderful way to lure people into their booth, as well as showcasing the French lifestyle.

Embracing their natural appearance

As I have talked about before in my French skin care investigation, French women rarely alter their appearance with cosmetic procedures. But being at a beauty show, surrounded by people in the cosmetic industry, I would have expected to see more cosmetic enhancements than I normally would just walking down the streets of Paris. Surprisingly, this was not the case. I saw one woman that looked like she had been pulled a bit too tight, but by and large, even people in the beauty business still like to age gracefully and naturally. It’s very refreshing since this is definitely not the case at the U.S. trade shows. (Read my observations from a U.S. tradeshow I attended last year.)

A focus on product and technique – less on machines

Attending this show confirmed that the French are relying more on product and manual technique and enhancing the experience through extensive consultations with clients, with less focus on machines. Knowledge of skin, giving a proper, customized treatment based on the skin’s unique needs, and education and extensive consultations cannot be replaced by a machine. This falls right in line with my philosophy about caring for the skin and enhancing the Renée Rouleau experience–although I do like to incorporate certain machines too.

All the rage in the U.S. is about using machine technology to give specific results to the skin. For example, manual extractions, which have long been part of a facial treatment practically since its inception, are not done a lot in the U.S. anymore like they are in France. Many U.S. skin care professionals claim there are certain machines, such as ultrasonic exfoliation that can give the same result, but less aggressively. While we do use ultrasonic exfoliation at my spas, and it can have some effect on cleaning the pores, there is nothing that cleans the pores better than manually. Read: Microdermabrasion or Ultrasonic Exfoliation –Which is Better?

A strong, organic, eco-friendly, sustainable movement

Without a doubt, in Europe, the skin care business is very organic, eco-friendly, and sustainable. This is true for other industries as well. This is very prevalent in not only Paris Beauty Week, but in life at homes, businesses, restaurants, and even outdoor areas. At the show, I observed this in everything from packaging to product to marketing, and so on. The U.S. is moving in this direction, but we are truly years behind. I definitely gained some helpful insight and inspiration. Read: How Renée Rouleau Goes Green

Less aggressive in their sales approach

I’m so used to the way in which Americans do business, both at trade shows and in day-to-day business life that it really took me by surprise at how less aggressive the vendors at the trade show were. If you walked by their booth, they may or may not say hello, they may or may not make eye contact, but rather they wait for you to express an interest in them. American beauty trade shows, on the other hand, people hound you. They have gimmicks they’re handing out, they’re making conversation, and they’re doing everything to lure you over to hear your sales pitch. Neither is right or wrong, it’s just a difference that I observed.

All in all, Paris Beauty Week was a huge success. Aside from attending the show where I did get some great new ideas, which will be revealed at a later date, I also had some great skin consultations with Parisian clients, and very productive meetings with various French vendors.

A few weeks back, I posted Would You Like to Be Renée’s Guest at the Women in Business Luncheon? I had the honor of being chosen for the 2011 “Outstanding Women in Business” award from the Dallas Business Journal, and as part of my commitment to be a mentor to other women, I offered one person the chance to accompany me to the awards luncheon to get some female inspiration.

For those who were interested, I asked them to e-mail me a few paragraphs on why attending the awards luncheon would be meaningful. Well, I got a huge response, but one e-mail stuck out in particular. It was from a young woman named Lori, who is also an esthetician. She wrote about how she wanted to learn from me, absorb it all, and receive guidance on how she can further herself in a profession that she has much passion in. I noticed that her phone number was an Ohio number so my first reaction was, “Does she realize that this luncheon is in Dallas?”

I had my assistant call her to see if by chance she did live in Dallas and low and behold, she really does live in Ohio but…she would fly in just to attend the luncheon with me. Wow! She said it would be a chance of a lifetime…

So I did choose her. Someone who was willing to go through all that effort to be with me was certainly someone who I had to meet! But of course, with all that effort, I had to sweeten the deal a bit and ensure her trip was a great experience.

We attended the luncheon together and Lori couldn’t have been nicer. We had a great time but I wasn’t sure what I was most proud about – being honored with an award or Lori’s presence!

After the luncheon, we went to my spa at One Arts Plaza in Dallas where she spent a few hours working with Grainne, one of my estheticians. (I would have worked with her personally but I had a previous commitment that I couldn’t cancel.) She sat in on facial treatments and was able to both observe how we perform our skin treatments, as well as learn from Grainne who is a highly experienced esthetician and has been at Renée Rouleau for 14 years. She soaked it all in and loved it. As those in the industry know so well, we are always on the giving end of the facial, and not as often on the receiving end. So my esthetician, Susan gave her our signature Cranberry Brasion Facial. She loved it!

She sent me the sweetest thank you card when she returned back to Ohio. “Renée, You have absolutely been a dream come true! You inspire me, make me work harder, and keep having me dream for bigger things to come. I cannot thank you and your team for this life-changing opportunity and experience. The whole trip will have an everlasting impression on my personal life career. Dream big! -Lori”

One thing she told me really touched me. This trip to Texas was the first time she had every traveled alone. Her mother was worried about her being by herself (as mothers do) and had offered to come down with her. She proudly told her mother this was her own journey and she wanted to embrace her independence as a young woman and go by herself. Love it!

What a great day and experience for all. The power of mentoring–I love it. Thank you Lori for giving us the gift of your presence. Your passion, positive attitude and desire to be the best in your field will give you a long, prosperous career in esthetics.

As someone who has spent her career on the giving end of pampering spa treatments, I always jump at the chance to be on the receiving end and this usually occurs when I travel. When I got to the resort, I immediately signed up for daily 90-minute massages (hot stone is my favorite).

So when I was having my massage, I got to talking with the therapist about her profession, only to be surprised that in Fiji, there is no formal licensing or training as there is in the U.S. and most of Europe. She told me that she performs both massage and facials and her manager was the one who trained her.

So as part of my lifelong mission to educate, empower and inspire women (read about my South African mentee), I offered to do a mini skin care class for her and any others who were interested. She was ecstatic…

The next day, I spent an hour with Liata and Filo teaching them how to do safe and gentle extractions (since cleansing of the pores is an important part of a facial) as well as sharing various skin care tips and advice they can pass on to their clients. They just soaked it all up and loved it and I was thrilled to do it.

I will always support women (and certainly my fellow estheticians) around the globe. The desire to learn and grow as individuals has no boundaries.

This month is my 15th year business anniversary. Renée Rouleau Skin Care started in 1996, and I’m happy to say that it’s going stronger than ever (considering that approximately 95% of all small businesses will fail in the first five years).

Fifteen years is a big milestone, here’s my back story.

In 1991 when I was just 21 years old, me and a co-worker opened up a skin care salon in Wellesley, MA. Despite five incredibly successful years and an amazing partnership, I needed a change in my life, and Texas came calling. Not because I knew anyone or had friends or family there, but simply because Texans were about the friendliest, most hard-working and most welcoming people I’d ever met and I knew it was a place I’d really love. (Loving country music was a plus).

Opening up a business when you don’t know a soul can be challenging, but I planned for a year before I moved so I felt confident I’d make it – despite friends and family calling me crazy…

At the time, I opened up as a day spa offering not only facials, but massage and body treatments too. Years later I would stop offering the body services and only offer skin care treatments, but it was 1996 and the day spa concept was just beginning and there were very few around so I knew I wouldn’t have much competition.

As I was going through the construction phase, I was looking for someone to lay down our tile in the reception area. So one day, I see a van parked in front of the new French restaurant that is gearing up to open that said “Tony The Tile Man” painted on it. Since I was looking for someone to do tile, I walked over to the restaurant and poked my head in and said “Is Tony The Tile Man in here?” A man in a French accent said he was in the back. I would end up marrying that French man.

So I knew I’d made it in business when that first Christmas, I came up with a clever way to sell gift certificates, since a day spa package was a sought after gift for husbands to give to their wives. Knowing that men wait until the last minute to purchase gifts, and knowing that they love sports, I took out a small ad on the sports page in the newspaper three days leading up until Christmas and wouldn’t you know it – the phone rang off the hook and there was a line out the door. It was genius. I continued doing this for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and it’s truly how I built my company in those early days.

In 1998, ReneeRouleau.com was born! My brother was (and still is) a web developer so he suggested early on that I should sell my products online. It was really a new concept but I feel lucky that I got a head start in that space. We still have many, many customers that were shoppers back in those early years, and I am truly grateful.

My decision to stop being a day spa was a difficult one indeed. It was 2000 and despite a booming business, there were day spas opening up on every street corner and it wasn’t special or unique anymore. Having gone to school as an esthetician and my first business being exclusively skin care, I was longing to get back to doing just that again.

So despite having thousands of dollars of unredeemed day spa package gift certificates as well as two full time massage therapists who were busy around the clock, I informed both my staff and our clients (via a postcard mailing) that we would be discontinuing the body services. Oh, the angry calls started flowing in from our customers. They loved that we were a one-stop shop for both their skin and body care services, but I knew it was the right decision as long as I could weather out the storm.

I ended up having to reimburse many people back for their gift certificates which meant I was losing a lot of business. I had to convince myself that I really made the right decision, but deep down I knew I did.

We brought in some new skin care treatments, and I expanded the skin care line and worked hard to create our new identity. I knew I made the right choice when we’d get in a new client who never knew us as a day spa and she’d say “I love the fact that you only specialize in skin care.” Yay! So despite some challenges, it all worked out.

In 2004, we relocated three miles up the road to Plano, Texas and have been there ever since. In 2008, I opened up a second location in the prestigious One Arts Plaza in Dallas.

Now, fifteen years later and serving thousands of clients both in our skin care spas and through our on-line store, Renée Rouleau Skin Care continues to thrive. Healthy, beautiful and glowing skin. It’s that simple. I recently launched Skin Source–a compilation of my best tips, tricks and expert advice which has been referred to as “The WedMD of skin care.”

Thank you for your continued loyalty, enthusiasm and faith you have in me and my staff. I am truly grateful and there is so much more to come!

I recently returned from my first visit to L.A. where I gave facials and skin consultations for four days at LeSpa in the beautiful Hotel Sofitel. (Located at Beverly and La Cienega.)

To give you the back-story on how this came to be, I wanted to have a presence in Los Angeles because I have many clients who live there that have facial treatments with me when they are in Dallas (and some even fly out to Dallas just for their facial) so the demand for me being in L.A. was there. However, I didn’t want to open up a new location simply because I don’t live there. So I have partnered with LeSpa at Hotel Sofitel to be able use one of their private VIP facial rooms, several times a year for my clients. Some of my visits will be before awards shows to ensure my celebrity clients have glowing skin for their red carpet appearances.

My first visit was absolutely fabulous. It was really fun to use another facility as I got a lot of great ideas to bring back to my own Dallas and Plano skin care spas. LeSpa is a beautiful spa with very talented massage therapists and estheticians. (I was able to find some time for my own pampering and had an amazing massage with Nicole)…

So who were some of my celebrity clients that experienced my facials? Of the ones that I’m allowed to name: Rebecca Mader (Lost), Lisa Loeb (singer), Lisa Rinna (Celebrity Apprentice, Dancing with the Stars, Days of Our Lives) and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place, Larry Crowne).

See what some of the celebs said on Twitter, post-facial:

Maria Canals-Barrera: “Loving my Skincare routine.:-) Here’s a pic from the Larry Crowne movie premiere 2 days ago!” (See her picture here)

Rebecca Mader: “Thanks for best facial ever! Genius! Took 10 years off me! Lol. So now I’m 15;)”

Lisa Rinna: “My skin is fab! Your talk on sunscreen was so important it really is the anti aging secret isn’t it?! You are the best!”

I am truly grateful for the hospitality given by both LeSpa and Hotel Sofitel and look forward to my next visit October 6-8, 2011. I’m currently in talks with various hotel spas in New York as I’d like to be able to do the same kind of arrangement there. I can’t wait!

Hotel: The One and Only in Cape Town, South Africa. It was luxurious. My last visit there, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was staying in the hotel room right next to me. Security was everywhere.

Jeans: I’m loving the colored skinny jeans by Rag & Bone for summer.

Jewelry: A diamond necklace my husband got me for my birthday last year.
