So as I’ve seen her being interviewed, I can’t help but notice that she hasn’t aged a bit! Is it because of mud masks? Or a secret ‘oink’ment?

When asked by People magazine how she stays young, she says this: “I don’t get wrinkles. That stuff they inject in people’s lips to puff them up? That stuff comes from my people. Some people donate blood. My people donate dermal filler.” Ha! Well said, Miss Piggy!

And she’s right. There are dermal collagen fillers that are made from pigs (porcine), but in the case of Miss Piggy, the reason why she looks so young is she has all that wonderful, natural fat in her face that plumps up her wrinkles.

When it comes to how your skin will age, there are three certain characteristics that we are genetically given (or not given) that can predict if you’ll maintain a more youthful appearance well into your later years…

1. A chubby face. If you are someone that the first place that shows weight gain is in your face (like myself), this means that you have an increased number of fat cells in your skin. While a chubby face may have been frustrating in your younger years (I know it was for me), consider yourself lucky since it is essential for a youthful look. Consider the fact that many people pay thousands of dollars to have their face injected with their own fat or fillers to prevent a hollow, sunken in look that comes with age.

Read: How Does Losing or Gaining Weight Affect the Skin?

2. A strong, firm neckline. This is also key to youthful-looking skin, since this is often the first area to lose its tone and show signs of sagging. A key component in a facelift and certainly a neck lift is to tighten that skin back up. (I recommend using Intensive Firming Serum on both the face and neck.)

Read: Skin Firming Tips for Those in Need of a Lift

3. High cheekbones. Of the three, if you’re blessed with nice, high prominent cheekbones, you definitely hit the jackpot. The skin in your face will not lose its tone as much since it gets “hung up” on the cheekbone and doesn’t drop as much. Again, people pay a lot of money to have cheek implants put in since this is known to be the key to a young-looking face.

But aside from genetics, you can definitely have a say in the matter of how your skin ages by using sunscreen 365 days a year faithfully (I love Daily Protection SPF 30), following a good skin care routine formulated for your skin type (choose your skin type), eating a healthy, well-balanced diet loaded with fruits and vegetables, getting plenty of beauty rest, managing stress and getting professional skin treatments for an additional skin boost.

While it is certainly understandable to focus on lessening wrinkles and preventing new ones, because wrinkles are so prevalent as we get older, I always make sure to share with my clients the importance of not only focusing on their wrinkles, but also to pay attention to the texture of the skin.

What I mean is: wrinkles are a fact of life and once they are formed, are very hard to get rid of without the help of Botox and injectable fillers. But many people focus so much on them, they often overlook the texture of their skin, which is something they have far more control over with the help of at-home products and professional treatments such as chemical peels…

Read: Considering Having a Chemical Peel? Important Information You Need to Know

When I look at someone’s skin, the first thing my eye goes to is the texture. A good texture constitutes pores on the smaller size, lack of dry, flaky skin, an even tone with minimal brown spots and a healthy, glowing shine to the skin. We all want to age gracefully and naturally, and the easiest way to do it is to focus on a good exfoliation routine to give smooth textured skin that can last a lifetime.

What is exfoliation?

By removing dry skin cells, you reveal healthy and vibrant skin. When caring for your skin, the phrase “out with the old, in with the new” really holds true. Exfoliation removes expired, dry skin cells making way for new, healthy, plump skin cells. It also helps to reduce blemishes and break outs, lessen clogged pores, rid the skin of dryness and lighten brown spots and hyperpigmentation—all while smoothing the skin.

What are the different types of exfoliants? There are two types of exfoliants. First, a “chemical” or “acid” exfoliant does the work for you. You apply it, leave it on the skin, and it works to dissolve the dry skin cells. These exfoliants include ingredients such as Glycolic Acid, AHA’s and BHA’s, and enzymes such as Pumpkin, Papaya, and Pineapple. Try Renée Rouleau Glycolic Serum 10%, 17%, or 20%, and occasionally treat your skin to our Triple Berry Smoothing Peel.

Second, a “physical” exfoliant means that you have to manually do the work. These exfoliants include facial brushes, sponges, and facial scrubs. Try Renée Rouleau Mint Buffing Beads or Micro Crystal Cream. A combination of both physical and chemical exfoliants will give your skin the best results.

How often should you exfoliate?

For chemical exfoliation: I suggest that you use one of our Glycolic Serums at night only, for seven nights on, seven nights off alternating with a hydrating serum. (See our collection of specialty serums.) As for our at-home peels, I suggest using these a few times a month to give your skin a boost of exfoliation.

For physical exfoliation: I suggest using a facial scrub 2-3 times a week. If you use the Clarisonic facial brush, you would use this in place of a facial scrub since it provides physical exfoliation. It’s not recommended to use both as you don’t want to over-exfoliate.

Read my review: Is the Clarisonic brush harmful or helpful to the skin?

Stubborn brown spots, sun spots, and brown patches on the skin are a concern for many, and while there are topical skin care products that can help to encourage their fading, one in particular is not without controversy. Hydroquinone is a commonly used skin bleaching agent that inhibits Tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in producing pigment. The controversy around Hydroquinone revolves around redness and skin irritation, but some reports have shown it as possibly causing liver cancer and leukemia in rats. Countries such as Europe, South Africa, and Japan have banned its use, but in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still considers it safe and it is commonly prescribed by dermatologists.

While I generally support the FDA, and have seen the positive impact it can make in reducing these stubborn brown spots for many of my clients, I do understand people’s concern in wanting to find a natural, less controversial solution. Adding to the controversy, the Texas Attorney General’s office has made one known Hydroquinone maker remove all their products using this ingredient from the shelves of spas and medical offices. So, for those who live in Texas, Hydroquinone may be harder to access. This also has happened in the state of Florida.

For a Hydroquinone-free alternative, look for products that contain high concentrations of Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Kojic Acid, and Licorice Extract (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which can help inhibit melanin production…

My Vitamin C&E Complex has been hugely beneficial for our clients in fading stubborn brown spots, sun spots and even discoloration due to hormones and pregnancy and it’s hydroquinone-free! It’s suggested to use underneath a daytime sunscreen, 365 days a year to suppress melanin activity. (We call it a “glow in a bottle.”)

Surprisingly, reports show that approximately 30 percent of aging is genetic, and 70 percent is up to you – how you care for and protect your skin, your body, and the lifestyle you lead. This certainly may come as a surprise, because a lot of people are under the impression that genetics is the main indicator of how you age, but this is simply not the case. The good news is that you really do have a say in the matter of how your skin will age.

But certainly, genetics does play a part. While I’ve seen studies that indicate you’re more likely to age more like your mother than your father, upon a recent trip to my niece’s graduation, I took the opportunity to observe both my parents’ skin a little closer to see if I’m following in their footsteps.

My mother: My mother has beautiful skin. She is 100% Finnish, which is where I have inherited my fair, sunburn-prone skin. As she has gotten older, like many people will experience, her skin has gotten far more sensitive, as she has periods of redness and rosacea symptoms, such as blotchiness and dilated capillaries. (Read: How Do I Get Rid of Broken Capillaries?) She has relatively small pores in the t-zone, and for most of her life her skin was more normal to dry – which is not my skin, as even at age 42 my skin is still very oily. She also never had many breakouts growing up, which is due to the minimal amount of oil that she produces. She is 74, and looks very good for her age, so I can only hope that I pick up some of her genetics, but I do think I lean more towards my father’s side…

My father: My father is 50% French and 50% Norwegian. As far as looks are concerned, I do think I look more like my father, and therefore I would think if you look more like one parent, you’ll genetically inherit their skin traits more. My father has oily skin with large pores, and at 73, those pores are prominent. (Read: Are Your Pores Getting Larger With Age?) Large pores are certainly something that I struggle with, so I definitely think I take after him in this area. Despite being fair-skinned like my mother, my skin doesn’t appear red or act sensitive, so I think that would be the French side of my dad coming through. My dad got breakouts when he was younger, but not as an adult. I struggled with breakouts certainly in my teenage years, but even as an adult I still get them. (Did you know that a man is less likely to struggle with adult hormone-related acne, as women will?) What I also know I have inherited from my father is having a lot of fat cells in the face, resulting in fuller-cheeks. We will also show weight gain first in the face more so than other areas of the body. But believe it or not, I am very lucky to have inherited this trait from my dad, because even though growing up I didn’t like having chubby cheeks, I consider it a blessing now, because we lose fat in the face as we get older, and many people will have fat injections and fillers put into the face to try and recreate a fuller face, therefore a more youthful look. Read more about that here.

So despite women more often aging like their mothers, I definitely find that because my looks are more similar to my father’s, I am aging far more like him.

So what does that mean? It means that sunscreen, more so than any other skin care product sold over-the-counter, has the ability to prevent wrinkles and premature skin aging.

I’ve talked about the importance of sunscreen many, many times, but this study really confirms the power that sunscreen can make on your skin. So even if you’re someone that likes to keep your skin care routine to a few easy steps, making sure that applying sunscreen is one of them can make a world of difference for your skin and how it will age!

I’ve learned some tips and tricks along the way, so follow these to put your best face and best self forward.

1. Wear a brighter blush

I often hear from my clients “my skin looks dull and no longer has a glow.” While there certainly my be some issues of under circulation within the skin, as well as the fact that we lose capillaries in the skin as we age, resulting in less blood flow and therefore less nutrients coming to the skin, your skin can be left looking dull and tired.

One suggestion that I do myself and suggest to my clients is a trick that I learned while having my makeup done. When the makeup artist applied my blush, which was a soft, peach color, he then took a second blush, a bright, hot pink color, and dusted it on my cheeks…

From looking at the color, I was convinced I was going to look like a clown, but surprisingly it just gave a pretty flush to my skin, almost like being in love.

Brightening up your blush color with pink is a simple and easy way to see yourself in a new light. Go for the glow!

Read: Is Your Skin Fading? Tips to Get the Glow

2. Maintain your eyebrow definition

As you age, the outer half of our eyebrows loses its shape and definition, partly due to the natural aging process and partly from over-tweezing when you were younger. You then need to use an eyebrow pencil to re-create a stronger, more defined eyebrow shape. When doing this, women will generally follow along their natural shape–but this is where the problem lies. Starting in your mid 40′s, your eyebrow will drop due to loss of tone in the skin resulting in the lack of an upward eye-opening arch.

Trick: As crazy as this sounds, tweeze ALL of the outer half of your eyebrows. (Yes, literally remove what I know you are trying desperately to keep.) Then, take your eyebrow pencil and create a new outer half with a higher arch. You’ve now just given yourself an instant eye lift taking years off your looks in the process!

Bottom line: Why accentuate the shape of a 50 year old flat eyebrow when you can create a younger, more youthful-looking shape of a 30 year old? Since the eyes are the windows to the soul, having a strong, nicely arched eyebrow matters.

(By the way, I learned this tip from our fabulous permanent makeup artist, Cees Penning who does this when he performs permanent makeup. See his amazing work here.)

3. Use contouring techniques with makeup

One of my celebrity clients shared this helpful trick with me. As you get older, not only is it important to update your makeup to follow the trends, but also to seek professional advice to make sure that your makeup is providing necessary enhancement. It’s too easy to fall into the same old, same old routine with makeup and look the same day in and day out. So not only is it helpful to update your routine and makeup, but the real secret that celebrity makeup artists use is all about learning the tricks to contouring and shading to enhance your best features and play down your weakest areas, such as making a fuller face look slimmer and cheekbones look higher. Now, we all can’t go to celebrity makeup artists to have this technique done, but you certainly can learn it yourself. Some of the big makeup lines (particularly MAC) offers classes where they can teach you how to develop these contouring tricks, for not only special occasions but for your everyday look as well. So consider looking into learning the art of contouring.

Read skin tips for those in their 20′s, 30′s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s.

4. Never underestimate the power of clothes

What you wear, and how you wear it can make a huge impact, both positively and negatively, on how you present yourself to the world. What does baggy sweatpants versus a cute pair of colored skinny jeans say about you? Charla Krupp has two great books that I highly recommend, How Not to Look Old and How to Never Look Fat Again. If you want to look your best at any age, she offers amazing tips and tricks.

5. Exfoliate often, but gently

The quickest, easiest way to get smoother skin is to exfoliate often to remove surface, dry skin cells that can cause the skin to look wrinkly and older. Literally, just one use of a facial scrub can give you instantly smoother skin. If you want even better results, add in an exfoliating acid serum that continues to work over time to smooth the texture of the skin, making you look younger. These are simple products that can easily be used at home and can make a world of difference with your skin. But when it comes to exfoliation, many people love how it changes their skin, so they figure it they do it more often, they can get even more results. This can be true, but too much can create irritation, inflammation, increased breakouts, and dryness, which can negate the positive results. I recommend using a mild facial scrub (Mint Buffing Beads) two to three times a week, and an exfoliating acid serum (see our Glycolic Acid Serums) seven nights on/seven nights off under moisturizer and repeat. For an added boost, you can use an at-home skin peel like Triple Berry Smoothing Peel twice a month.

So here are my helpful shortcuts to achieving an easier skincare routine all summer long.

Use your facial scrub as a cleanser. Gentle facial scrubs should be used 2-3 times per week but many people are inconsistent with their facial scrubs because it adds one extra step. Most facial scrubs are formulated with a cream base, which contains cleansing properties so this allows your facial scrub to double as a cleanser during your morning shower. Two benefits, cleansing and exfoliating, in one 30 second step! Try Mint Buffing Beads for the perfect cooling, pick-me-up!…

Blot, blot, blot. Lazy girls don’t have time to fuss with researching all the latest oil-controlling products, so the easiest way to control oil production in the summer is to blot your skin with tissue to soak up excess oil on the skin. Fast, easy and effective.

Use an at-home peel if you are overdue for a facial. Monthly facials are a must, especially in the summer to control the damage from the sun, but occasionally we tend to let our skincare maintenance take a backseat to either a busy schedule or just plain laziness. For a quick skin fix use an at-home peel like Renée Rouleau Triple Berry Smoothing Peel— just ten minutes to beautiful, glowing skin!

Wash your skin earlier in the evening. It is commonly believed that skin has to be washed right before going to bed; a time when you are most tired and laziness is at its peak. Perform your nighttime routine before or after dinner, around 7:00 or 8:00pm. Early evening is better than never!

Use mineral powder when reapplying sunscreen. Wearing sunscreen in the summer is a must. You might have been told that it is necessary to reapply sunscreen every two hours. When laziness sets in, reapplying sunscreen is almost always forgotten. The easiest and fastest way to reapply sunscreen is to use SPF-based mineral powders. These popular powders have built-in sunscreens, and with a few quick brush strokes you can protect your skin and keep it safe from damaging rays. I personally use the ColoreScience line available for purchase here.

Give your skin a boost of hydration by leaving your toner damp. Alcohol-free toners are an essential part of a basic skin care routine and should always be used after cleansing. Lazy girls like to keep the steps of their routine to a minimum, so when you’re pressed for time skip the skin serum and leave your toner damp before applying moisturizer. This will give your skin the essential and sufficient boost of hydration. FYI, applying toner to a Toning Cloth and wiping over the skin should only take 15 seconds! See our collection of alcohol-free toners.

Before you go to sleep prop an extra pillow under your head to prevent morning under eye puffiness. Tired, puffy eyes are an inevitable fact of life but taking the time to apply an eye gel does not have to be. Why add on to an already busy morning of skin care and makeup application, when you can think a step ahead and prevent puffiness? By elevating your head with an extra pillow you will encourage drainage to keep swollen eyes at bay.

On an episode of Oprah a while back were supermodels from the 1980s, Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs and Beverly Johnson. Considering they are in the world of beauty and their jobs are based on their faces, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were aging very gracefully and hadn’t overdosed on cosmetic surgery.

Observing the three woman, the one thing that struck me most was how much Cheryl Tiegs’ skin was fading. What do I mean by that? When the skin ages, less oxygen and nutrients are being delivered to the skin. For example, by the time you are 75 years old, you have about 50% less blood vessels in your face, so with less vessels, it means less blood is flowing to the skin. And this is what is starting to cause Cheryl’s skin fading, lacking the glow and looking fairly washed out.

Simply adding a brighter blush could make an instant improvement in the skin looking brighter, and since her blush color was very subtle, it added to the dull, tired look (Don’t get me wrong, at age 64, Cheryl looks beautiful)…

It’s so important to focus on keeping good circulation in the skin so nutrient-rich blood can deliver what it needs to the skin to keep it glowing.

-Try incorporating products containing vasodilators. This includes ingredients such as peppermint and ginseng which work to give the skin a pick-me-up! Try Renée Rouleau Triple Berry Smoothing Peel, Revitalizing Ginseng Toner, Luxe Mint Cleansing Gel and Mint Buffing Beads. When applied topically to the skin, these ingredients work to dilate the blood vessels, therefore, allowing the skin to accommodate more nutrient-rich blood. With continued use, you can get skin that glows!

-Avoid smoking. Smoking causes cells to be starved of oxygen resulting in dull, tired-looking skin.

-Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol which can impair circulation.

-Avoid yellow-based colors for makeup and clothing (mustard, olive green, khaki, burnt orange) as they can make the skin appear sallow. Mineral makeup is a great choice for giving your skin the look of radiant glowing skin!

-Massage in your moisturizer. When applying your moisturizer, massage into the skin using firm circular motions to help increase blood flow. Read: Moisturizer Do’s and Don’ts

As a skin care expert and esthetician, I am pretty fanatical about avoiding unnecessary exposure to the sun and UV light. While some of these practices may seem a little extreme to you, they are tips that I live and swear by.

Sun Protection Tip #1: Beware of daylight coming through windows.

There is a belief that the only time you get sun exposure (and therefore sun damage) is when you are outside. I’m here to say that this is just not true. UV light (that damages your skin) can penetrate windows at any daylight hour. For example, my bedroom has big windows all around it, so I always wake to sunlight (or just daylight on cloudy days) coming through. The moment I wake up, I immediately cover my face with my sheets until I’m ready to get out of bed, since I’m not wearing sunscreen. Crazy I know, but every minute counts when it comes to skin protection and as someone who is in a profession where having good skin matters, I take it very seriously. I also have shades on the window in my office to filter out daylight during my working hours…

Sun Protection Tip #2 – Apply sunscreen to the entire face, neck and chest – generously.

Did you know that an SPF 30 only protects the skin 4% more than an SPF 30? And as you go up in number, this percentage lowers. The real truth behind sun protection is not the SPF number, but how generously you apply it. Published medical studies have shown that most people apply 1/3 to 1/2 the recommended dose of sunblock. A little dab won’t do ya! First thing in the morning, I apply a thick coat to the face, neck, ears, tops of hands and chest (my exposed areas of skin) for an important defense against the UV rays given off from the sun. Since the skin on my face is oily and acne-prone (I’m a skin type #2 in my nine skin types), and since sunblock should be applied generously, it is so important to find one that is formulated for your skin type and won’t feel greasy or cause breakouts. I use my Daily Protection SPF 30, which gives both UVA and UVB protection and dries to a matte finish on the skin. It works amazing under my makeup since it’s so light–I love it.

Sun Protection Tip #3 – Get your car windows tinted.

The side and rear car windows do not filter out any damaging UV rays, so consider tinting your car windows. I recently purchased a new car and had my car windows tinted with a special tint that is used on military planes that cuts out 95% of UV rays, yet is not very dark in color. This esthetician means business when it comes to my skin!

Sun Protection Tip #4 – Wear sun protection clothing.

I know it may sound like I live my life in a dark cave–this is hardly the truth! I own a Harley Davidson and spend my free time out on the open road, plus I love running outside when the weather is nice. So to protect my skin from the damaging rays, I purchase special sun protective clothing (light jackets and shirts) to wear when I’m outdoors for long periods of time. Most shirts offer only 5 to 9 SPF whereas sun protective clothing can offer up to an SPF 58. Again, as someone who wants my skin to look its best–every effort to protect my skin adds up through the years. Actress, Nicole Kidman has been known to wear sun protective clothing to protect her skin from the harsh sun in Australia and to keep her freckles under control.

Sun Protection Tip #5 – Apply mineral powder throughout the day.

You’ve always heard how important it is to apply sunblock every 2 hours, yet if you’ve got full makeup on, but this may not be practical. SPF-infused mineral powders are all the rage these days, and have a natural sunblock built in them (usually a minimum SPF 20). Keep one in your handbag and dust it on your skin throughout the day since direct sunlight, as well as the oils your skin naturally produces can degrade protection. I also dust mine on the tops of my hands since my morning application of sunblock will wash off when I wash my hands. I personally use ColoreScience SPF 50 Mineral Powder available for purchase on my website here.

What about getting Vitamin D from the sun? This is certainly a hot topic and I’ve talked about this many times here on my blog and on Twitter.

The American Academy of Dermatology has recently updated its position statement on vitamin D based on the results of a review of the increasing body of scientific literature on this vitamin and the importance for optimal health recently conducted by the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine (IOM).
The Academy continues to recommend that the public obtain vitamin D from a healthy diet that includes food naturally rich in Vitamin D, foods and beverages fortified with vitamin D, and/or dietary supplements. The Academy reaffirmed its position that vitamin D should not be obtained from the sun or indoor tanning devices, as UV radiation is a known risk factor for the development of skin cancer. The Academy encourages those with concerns about their levels of vitamin D to discuss options for obtaining sufficient dietary or supplementary sources of vitamin D with their physician.

I personally take Vitamin D supplements as well as eat a diet high in Vitamin D, but I am not always diligent about applying SPF to my legs when I run or go for a walk outside (three days a week), so there is still plenty of opportunity for the natural sun’s rays to get on my skin.

Bottom line: Research shows that 78% of all sun damage is from incidental exposure (the times when you think you aren’t exposed, but you are). The truth is every time daylight sees your skin (inside or out, winter or summer), you increase how rapidly your skin will age. So if you want to get really serious about lowering your risk of skin cancer and preventing premature skin aging, practice these tips. You really do have a say in the matter of how your skin will look and act when it’s older, but the choice is yours.
