Does It Hurt When Getting Botox?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular procedure for reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, but many shy away from it because of the possible pain associated with the needle used for the injection. You might be wondering, “How painful is it to have it done? Does it really hurt?”

I don’t personally perform BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments on clients since I am an esthetician, however, I do get it done personally from our cosmetic nurse (who does give Botox injections to our clients) so I’m on the receiving end and can honestly tell you that it doesn’t hurt very much at all. Injectors use a tiny 30 gauge needle and, while you will experience a quick pinch or sting, it’s not bad.

If you’re someone who is nervous about the pain from needles, here are three helpful tips.

1. Hum to manage the quick sting, instead of using a squeeze ball. Some injectors may give you one of those squeeze (stress balls) to hold on to in case you experience pain, but a recent study showed that humming is far more effective at distracting your brain from any pain. In fact, the last time I had Botox, I hummed a little song the whole time to test out this theory and it made it a lot of easier–and less painful. Try it; it works!

2. Be sure your injector applies a numbing cream 10 minutes before injecting. While it won’t completely numb the skin, a prescription anesthetic numbing cream will soften the sting. Be sure to ask if one will be used prior to making your appointment as not all injectors incorporate it into the procedure.

3. Watch a friend get Botox. Often times fear is worse than the potential pain itself, so tagging along with a friend and watching the Botox procedure may help ease your mind.

Personally, I’m not a fan of all the cosmetic procedures that are available simply because of the risk and potential side effects involved, but BOTOX® Cosmetic is one procedure that I feel is safe and can offer natural results (when done conservatively) for younger-looking skin. Don’t let a little sting prevent you from taking advantage of this effective treatment.
