Certainly with the hormones related to being pregnant, for some, the skin can be greatly affected, while for many, it can change very little. The most common changes in the skin during pregnancy can be pregnancy-induced melasma (brown patches on the skin), an increase or decrease in acne or blemishes, and redness and dilated capillaries. Due to certain high-performance ingredients that are often suggested by doctors to avoid while you’re pregnant, it can be challenging to manage some of these changes to the skin during pregnancy. Post-pregnancy, however, is when you want to address these conditions that may linger long after the baby has arrived.

Here are helpful skin tips to reduce breakouts after pregnancy.

Schedule a professional facial or chemical peel. Put your skin in the hands of a professional – don’t try to go it alone. You’re a busy mom, focusing on adjusting your new baby into the world, so trying to take time out to figure out for yourself how to handle your skin is not where your time is best spent. A licensed esthetician can perform soothing problem skin treatments to the skin, as well as recommend tips and tricks and a home care regimen that you can easily follow. (Read: What Are the Benefits of Getting a Facial?) Visit the Renée Rouleau Skin Care Spas in Dallas and Plano, Texas.

Avoid picking at the skin. While this tip may seem obvious, it is imperative that we understand that although breakouts cannot always be avoided, you CAN control what happens once you get the breakout. The truth of the matter is, a blemish usually lasts 5-7 days, but the red or dark scar from picking at the blemish, can linger for weeks—or even months. Read: Are You Guilty of Picking at Your Skin?…

Use skin care products containing Salicylic Acid. This ingredient is a keratolytic beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and suggested to avoid while pregnant, but once the baby is born it can be used safely. It is commonly known for its ability to smooth the skin without causing irritation while it reduces acne-causing bacteria and oil. Salicylic acid helps to prevent blemishes and penetrates the pores to help clear out impurities. These properties not only help prevent acne, but salicylic acid is an excellent ingredient that also prevents blackheads after a deep pore cleansing facial. Because of its skin regulating properties, you will usually find salicylic acid in cleansers and moisturizers formulated for breakout prone skin as well as in acne spot treatments. It’s a fabulous ingredient with proven results. See Renée Rouleau products that use Salicylic Acid: AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel, Triple Berry Smoothing Peel, Daytime Blemish Gel and Tea Tree Anti-Blemish Lotion.

Avoid using harsh products that leave the skin feeling dry and irritated. Especially if you are nursing, you may experience dehydration and many cleansers and toners, formulated for problem skin, are designed to dry out breakouts and so they contain strong detergents and alcohols. Drying out infected breakouts where active blemishes are present may be helpful for destroying acne-causing bacteria, but the harsh ingredients will dehydrate non-broken out areas resulting in dry skin cell buildup. This layer of dehydrated skin cells will trap oil and acne-causing bacteria under the skin, which will ultimately cause an increase in breakouts–the last thing your skin needs! Be sure to purchase cleansers that are labeled ‘sulfate-free’ and avoid the ingredients Sodium Laureth (or Lauryl), Sulfate, and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. These ingredients can be extremely dehydrating to the skin. See our collection of gentle, sulfate-free cleansing gels and cleansing lotions and alcohol-free toners.

Read: Five Tips to Reduce Oil Production

Identify your blemishes and treat them accordingly. Not all blemishes are equal so before you apply a spot treatment, you need to identify what kind of blemish it is.

Acne cysts- These are those hard, sore bumps under the skin (most often occurring in the chin and jaw area) that linger for weeks. Your best bet is to leave it alone. Since the infection is not on the surface, traditional spot treatment drying lotions will only dry out your skin, which will cause peeling. Instead of making matters worse, apply ice or use Renée Rouleau Anti Cyst Treatment.

Whiteheads/closed comedones- Little clogged bumps under the skin that aren’t red or sore, just little white-ish bumps under the skin also known as “clogged pores.” Since these have no infection (meaning they aren’t sore), using harsh acne products will only make whiteheads worse by causing dry skin cell build up, which will trap oil in the skin longer. Exfoliate! Steer clear of the dead skin cell buildup to help the clogged pores purge naturally. A good deep pore cleansing facial is also beneficial for removing the impurities within the pores.

Papules- The next stage past a closed comedone (whitehead) where bacteria has caused inflammation and infection resulting in a painful, red blemish. The main difference between a papule and a pustule is that pustule is the next stage where dead bacteria and dead skin cells rise to the surface causing yellow pus. The main symptom of a papule is inflammation and irritation so the goal is not to dry it out with acne products but rather to calm down the inflammation by using topical cortisone cream (found at the drug store) and ice compresses followed by a soothing mask like Renée Rouleau Azulene Gel Mask. These both will reduce the painful inflammation.

Pustules- These are inflamed blemishes that contain pus. Pustules are your traditional “zits” that are most likely to cause post-breakout red or dark scars IF you don’t properly know how to care for them. You MUST NOT touch these until you can see a whitehead. Then you can carefully extract the infected pus and immediately spot treat with our Night Time Spot Lotion. Our Daytime Blemish Gel works very well, too.

Here are my expert skin tips for reducing, controlling, and possibly curing back blemishes and breakouts.

Shower Often
The people that are most likely to get back breakouts are the ones that produce excessive oil. Generally, those who have oily skin on their face will also have excessive oil production on the back as well. Since oil is a breeding ground for bacteria, one of the ways to reduce back breakouts is to shower often – and that means twice a day. Keeping the skin clean can make a huge difference.

Use an Antibacterial Cleanser
Every time you shower, I suggest using a powerful antibacterial cleanser to deep clean the skin, remove oils, and reduce acne-causing bacteria. It is hard to find a body cleanser on the market that will do the trick, so using a face cleanser for acne-prone skin is recommended. Look for a cleanser that is sulfate-free (that does not contain Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and uses acne-fighting salicylic acid. AHA/BHA Cleansing Gel works very well to help fight breakouts without over-drying the skin.

Be Sure to Exfoliate
Since back breakouts can be made worse when the skin has an abundance of dead skin cells on the surface, it is crucial to gently remove the cellular buildup by exfoliating the back every time you shower. It can be hard to reach all the way on your back to do it yourself, so a simple solution to that is applying your antibacterial cleanser directly to an Exfoliating Body Cloth. It’s similar to a loofah, but much thinner. Regular loofahs, due to the thick texture and their weaving pattern, do not dry very well, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. The last thing you want to do is add bacteria to your back when you are trying to get rid of it. The Exfoliating Body Cloth is very thin, and can dry easily, thus avoiding bacteria growth. But, due to its stretchy material and square shape, once you apply the cleanser to it, if you hold opposite corners, with your right hand holding one corner over your top right shoulder, allowing the cloth to come diagonal down the back, with the left hand holding the opposite corner down on your left side by your waist, you can easily move it in a back and forth motion. When doing this, be sure to bend forward and curve your back. This will allow the cloth to work well on the top of the back which is usually where most back acne occurs. By using the Exfoliating Body Cloth along with the acne-fighting ingredients, it allows the cleanser to work much better and deeper within the skin…

Apply a Acne Spot Treatment When Necessary
When you have larger and inflamed blemishes such as cysts, the type of blemishes that are sore, painful, and under the skin, rarely coming to the surface, Anti Cyst Treatment works to penetrate deep within the skin to dissolve and digest the infection. In my experience, I have found that men are more likely than women to get cystic acne on their back. So applying this treatment as needed after showering can give excellent results.

For regular blemishes where the infection does come to the surface in the form of a whitehead, applying a drying spot treatment such as Night Time Spot Lotion can help heal those quickly. A lot of acne spot treatments on the market contain Benzoyl Peroxide. While this can be beneficial, you run the risk of bleaching out your clothing that comes in contact with it.

See the entire collection of problem skin spot treatments.

Perform Weekly Mask Treatments
If your back acne is really severe, once a day, after you shower, cleanse your back, and exfoliate with the Exfoliating Body Cloth and when you’re finished bathing, apply a thin coat of a mask formulated for problem skin. Leave on and let dry for 15 minutes, shower, and finish with an antibacterial lotion like Tea Tree Anti-Blemish Lotion. By applying a mask on freshly cleansed and exfoliated skin, it will allow the active ingredients from the mask to get into the skin and work their blemish-fighting magic. Look for a mask with ingredients like sulfur, camphor, salicylic acid, tea trees, and clay like Detoxifying Mask. To avoid drying out the skin, especially in winter, you can apply moisturizer as necessary, but make sure it is one that is formulated to fight breakouts, having similar ingredients as the mask.

Read: How to Squeeze a Blemish

Avoid Panthenol in Hair Conditioner
An ingredient that I have personally found that gave me problems with back acne during my teenager years is Panthenol. Because of the high percentages of this ingredient in many hair products, it can increase the likelihood of breakouts and acne along your hairline and on your back. It is important to remember that when used in skin care products, due to the low percentages present, Panthenol will not cause increased breakouts so no worries there.

Schedule a Back Facial
While all of the suggestions listed above are great things you can do for yourself at home, to get even better results schedule an appointment to get a back treatment with a skin care professional such as an esthetician. What is a back facial? A back facial is a treatment designed to clean out clogged pores, as well as give a powerful professional strength exfoliation to enhance the results of your home care. Plus, your esthetician may offer his or her expert advice based on what they observe with your condition. Visit the Renée Rouleau skin care spas in Dallas and Plano, Texas.

Read: A 3-Step Plan for Reducing Blackheads

Use Medication – If Necessary
If you have been diligent about caring for the acne on your back in the ways that have been described above, including getting back facials, and you’re seeing no improvement, you may want to consult with a dermatologist about the possibility of temporarily getting on antibiotics. Some cases of back acne, particularly those with extreme cystic acne, may find that antibiotics is more powerful and may be needed to avoid long-term scarring.

While I know this is a topic I wouldn’t normally discuss on this blog, this is a personal subject for me, and it does in fact relate back to skin care.

Many years ago, I went through a phase for a few years where I struggled with yeast infections, sometimes getting them as often as once a month, but most of the time bi-monthly. I frequented the gynecologist’s office and experimented with many different prescription medications, and did find one that successfully made it go away, but they would still always reoccur. As someone who doesn’t like to rely on prescription medication, I decided to do my own research to help figure out a better solution.

What I learned about yeast infections is they can be a result of an upset in the pH balance of the vaginal area. When the balance of good and bad bacteria is thrown off, it can create yeast overgrowth. Because I’m in skin care and understand the concept of pH balance and why it is so important to use pH neutral cleansers on your face (which is why all my cleansing gels are pH balanced and sulfate-free), I decided to use my Purifying Face Wash to wash with “down there,” as opposed to a heavily-perfumed, high-foaming shower gel that I had been using. Much to my surprise, I noticed immediate results, and didn’t get another yeast infection until nine months later! I didn’t change anything up other than using this cleanser, so I am personally convinced that using a gentle pH neutral cleanser was the cure for me.

The pH scale ranges from 1-14, with 1 being very acid, 7 neutral, and 14 very alkaline. The idea pH level is 7.35 and your body fights hard to maintain this normal level. Purifying Face Wash has a pH of 7.3, so it is in the perfect range to use on your body. It is free of colorants, dyes, perfumes, parabens and is extremely gentle–unlike most shower gels and soaps…

So if you struggle with yeast infections, you may want to consider using a gentle pH neutral cleanser, or better yet my Purifying Face Wash.

Cleansers all have generally the same basic function, which is to clean dirt, debris, oil, bacteria and makeup from the skin. But, there are definitely some things you need to know when it comes to choosing the right cleanser and using it correctly.

Do choose a cleanser made exclusively for your skin type

It’s difficult for me to understand how skin care companies are able to say that their cleansers are “suitable for all skin types.” All skin is different and therefore, each individual has very unique needs when it comes to skin care products. Because a cleanser is a staple in a day and evening skin care routine, it’s essential that you’re using one for your skin type. That is why Renée Rouleau products are not designed for just oily, normal or dry skin; I create products and systems for types 1 through 9. See our nine skin types. When you’re using one that is for your skin type, you are guaranteed to get the best results.

Do avoid cleansers containing synthetic fragrance if your skin is sensitive

Individuals with sensitive skin can react negatively to synthetic perfumes. Before purchasing your cleanser take a look at the ingredients and avoid products that read “parfum” or “fragrance.” Information regarding artificial fragrance ingredients will usually be down towards the end of the list of ingredients. All Renée Rouleau cleansers do not contain artificial fragrance…

Do switch cleansers every season, if necessary

Your skin’s ability to retain moisture or reduce oil production is directly correlated to the climate in which you live. If you are more accustomed to a humid environment or have oily skin, you will want to use a foaming or gel cleanser, and in dry environments, a lotion-based cleanser may be best for those with dry skin. Be sure to reassess not only your cleanser, but your other products as well, every change of season for best results.

Do wipe over skin with facial sponges after cleansing

Particularly when washing your skin at night with a cleansing lotion, it is important to do a physical wiping with facial sponges or a baby wash cloth to ensure makeup, dirt, and oil come off the skin and so you won’t find it on your cotton pad when applying your toner.

See the collection of Renée Rouleau cleansing lotions and sulfate-free gel cleansers.

Do limit the use of the Clarisonic brush with your cleanser

The Clarisonic brush is a popular device to use along with a cleanser when washing your face. The company suggests for you to use it with every cleansing, but I feel this is way too much for the skin. Instead, I only suggest using it no more than three times a week. Read: Is the Clarisonic Brush Harmful or Helpful to the Skin?

Do apply moisturizer within 60 seconds after cleansing

After cleansing, you must IMMEDIATELY use an alcohol-free toner and moisturizer. If you leave your skin bare for more than 1 minute, it will start to dehydrate as the dry air attracts moisture out of the skin. Perform your skin care routine quickly, and be sure to always leave your toner damp on the skin. This will leave your skin protected and avoid the tight and dry feeling.

Don’t use a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling tight or dry

Many foaming and gel cleansers made today are formulated with an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate or Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. This ingredient is a surfactant; a cleansing agent that cuts oil from the skin. These ingredients are simply too harsh and will strip the water out of the skin after every washing leaving the skin feeling tight and creating more oil and shine. And what you wash with is the MOST important part of your skin care routine. Why? Because if you wash with a foaming cleanser or soap that is too drying, it pulls all the water out of the skin and creates dead, dry skin cell buildup. Then you have to quickly run and put your moisturizer on to put back in what you just took out! It makes no sense! Choose either cleansing lotions and gel cleansers that avoid the harsh ingredient, Sodium or Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate. These will be better choices, as they will effectively deep clean the pores but will not rob the skin of much-needed water.

Remember the rule: More lather, more drying. Less lather, less drying. All Renée Rouleau cleansers are sulfate-free.

Don’t wash with bar soap

Washing with a bar of soap – no matter how expensive it is or how moisturizing it claims to be – is just an absolute no-no. The binders that hold a bar of soap together naturally have a high pH balance, so they are always going to be too strong for the skin. When you wash with something that’s too harsh, you strip the water out of the skin leaving it dehydrated with dry skin cell build up. Then, you have to run and put on moisturizer to put back in what you just took out.

Skin cells are like fish, they need water to live and without water they die. Bar soaps are more suitable for the body, not the face.

Don’t skimp on choosing a quality cleanser

When it comes to choosing skin care products, people will splurge and invest money into a moisturizer. But when it comes to using a cleanser, they don’t give as much thought and just use something inexpensive from the drug store. Since cleansing is the first part of your routine, if you use something that is not of good quality, leaving your skin tight, dry, or irritated, then your expensive serums and creams now have to do repair work to recover the skin from the potential dehydration caused by your cleansing products. Choosing a good quality cleanser can make or break your routine, so choose wisely.

Which cleanser will you choose?

Here are five important things to look for in a cleanser.

1. If your cleanser leaves your skin feeling tight or dry, it’s not a fit for your skin.

While you certainly want a cleanser to offer a nice cleaning, you don’t want it to unnecessarily strip water out of the skin, which will encourage dead skin cells, resulting in unhealthy skin. Instead, when cleansing, the skin should feel clean, but never tight or dry. Look for a cleanser using sulfate-free formulas, as these will be hydrating to the skin. See the collection of Renée Rouleau sulfate-free gel cleansers and cleansing lotions.

2. Cleansing with a bar of soap is a no-no.

Speaking of leaving your skin feeling tight or dry, anything that comes in a bar form (even if it says it’s moisturizing) will automatically guarantee dehydrated skin after using. The binders that hold a bar of soap together naturally have a high pH balance, which will cause the skin to be stripped of moisture. Bar soaps may be suitable for the body, but not the face–despite what some companies will tell you.

3. Always rinse off, never tissue off.

Cream-based tissue off cleansers aren’t as commonly found these days as they were years ago, but I never recommended them because the residue that’s left behind when wiping off with a tissue provides an unnecessary residue that will prevent the important ingredients in your serums and moisturizer that follow from properly absorbing into the skin…

4. They can multitask as a shaving cream or gel.

Did you know that cleansers, whether foaming, lotion, or cream formula can substitute as a shaving product when you’re in a pinch? They have skin softening properties that can make it easy for a razor to glide across. Many of our clients use our Gentle Gel Cleanser to shave their legs.

5. Foaming gel, lotion or cream: choose the best one for your skin type.

It’s really important that you match the cleanser to the needs of your skin, so that the first step in your routine is getting your skin off to a good start. Generally, gels are best used in the morning right before cleansing, while cleansing lotions do a better job at dissolving makeup off the skin in the evening. For best results, be sure to choose a formula that is best suited for your skin type. Read: Gel, Lotion or Cream: Which Cleanser is Best?

So, remember, it is important to pay attention and follow these simple guidelines when it comes to choosing the correct cleanser, because it is the first step in your routine and certainly an important one.

It’s certainly a valid thought but cleansing your skin in the morning is truly important.

The reason why it’s important to wash your skin in the morning is because while you sleep at night, your skin is in repair mode and will secrete toxins and sebum which can prevent your daytime products from working most effectively. When you wash your skin in the morning, you’re removing toxins and sebum and you’re also removing your nighttime products so that your daytime products (particularly SPF moisturizer) can get into the skin better, since it will have a clean slate.

Also, the nighttime products that are on your skin often times contain ingredients that are suitable for the night, not the day, such as acids and retinol. These should be cleansed from the skin to avoid any reactions or potential irritation…

The answer is absolutely no. Tight skin equals dry skin.

If the skin feels tight after washing, it is a sign that the skin has been stripped of all its water, therefore causing surface dead skin cell build up. Then you have to rush and put your moisturizer on to replenish the moisture that you just took out – which makes absolutely no sense!

Going back in time, aside from when cold creams hit the market, most facial cleansers were in the form of a bar soap. People had become accustomed to a tight feeling after washing, writing it off as a “normal sensation.” In the past 25 years as advancements in skin care have evolved, cleansing gels and cleansing lotions have become a more popular option due to a mild and gentler cleansing action.

So what should you look for in a cleanser? Toss the bar soap, and don’t use those on the face – even if it says it’s moisturizing. The binders that hold a bar soap together naturally have a high pH balance, so it is always dehydrating. Instead, choose cleansing gels that avoid the ingredients Sodium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl (or Laureth) Sulfate –or look for those listed as “sulfate-free”. Sulfates are found in many, many gel and foaming cleansers and can be equally as drying as bar soaps.

Tip: If you like that tight feel after washing, rinse your cleanser off with icy cold water. This will make your skin feel squeaky clean without depleting its water levels…

Note: All of the Renée Rouleau gel cleansers will still make the skin feel very clean after washing but they certainly won’t cause skin dehydration. See our collection of gel cleansers.

Also, all of our cleansing lotions are water-soluble and rinse away clean without leaving a greasy residue. See our collection of cleansing lotions.

But what if you are using a very gentle sulfate-free cleanser or cleansing lotion and your skin still feels dry afterward? After cleansing, you must IMMEDIATELY use an alcohol-free toner and moisturizer. If you leave your skin bare for more than 1 minute, it will begin to dehydrate. Perform your skin care routine quickly, and be sure to always leave your toner damp on the skin. This will leave your skin protected and help to avoid the tight & dry feeling.

So here is my plan to help you to reach beautiful skin in just TWO minutes!

Step 1: Wash your face, applying cleanser to damp skin. Massage and rinse. (Read: How to Wash Your Face)
Total Time = 25 seconds

Step 2: Apply alcohol-free toner with a toning cloth. (See our alcohol-free toners)
Total Time = 25 seconds

Step 3: Apply moisturizer (appropriate for your skin type) to your face and neck. (See our moisturizers)
Total Time = 25 seconds

Total time for a simple skin care routine = 2 minutes!

So now you can see that taking care of your skin really doesn’t consume very much time. I have yet to meet anyone who couldn’t spare two minutes of his or her evening for this routine, especially when the two minutes can result in healthy, beautiful, glowing skin! Remember, this secret to beautiful skin isn’t always a magic skin care ingredient, it’s simply compliance. You must be willing to put in the effort…

Do you have an extra 25 seconds? Apply a serum under your moisturizer for extra skin benefits!

I often hear from my clients “my skin looks dull and no longer has a glow.” While there certainly my be some issues of under circulation within the skin that can contribute to a dull, tired complexion, I also think that day in, day out, you look at yourself in the mirror and see the same you. Especially in the middle of winter, your skin can just look plain dull.

One suggestion that I do myself and suggest to my clients is a trick that I learned while having my makeup done. After the makeup artist applied my blush, he then took a second blush color, a bright, hot pink, and lightly dusted just on the apples of my cheeks.

From looking at the color, I was convinced I was going to look like a clown, but surprisingly it just gave a pretty flush to my skin, almost like being in love…

If you have been using the same blush color everyday, and feel like your skin is need of a glow – brightening up your blush color with pink is a simple and easy way to see yourself in a new light. Go for the glow!
