When a chin hair is tweezed or waxed, the hair can grow back at an angle and miss the opening of the follicle, and get trapped under the skin resulting in an ingrown hair. The hair follicle gets infected causing a bump and evening leading to a small pimple. Although you can use an acne spot treatment to heal the infection, this doesn’t resolve the problem that a hair is literally stuck under the skin. You have three choices in preventing ingrown hairs. -You can continue to tweeze or wax, but increase your use of exfoliants, such as our Glycolic Acid serums or our Triple Berry Smoothing Peel. Regular exfoliation will keep the hair follicles open to lessen the chance of the hair getting ingrown. -Look into having laser hair removal. Many of our clients have had great success and many have not. Be sure to have a thorough consultation and ask what kind of results they can guarantee. I know for me when I had laser hair removal; I was promised I would never have to shave again. I am still shaving… -The best solution is to trim the hair closely to the skin. By trimming the hair on the surface, the hair will always have an opening to get out of the skin so it will never get ingrown. The downside of trimming the hair is that you’ll always be able to feel the coarse hair, and you must do it often. *Ingrown hairs are most common in those with coarse, curly hair such as dark-skinned individuals. ![]() Content Copyright © 2012, Renée Rouleau, Inc PERMISSION TO REPRINT: You may use any items from this article in your print, blog, magazine or electronic newsletter. Hey, Renée!
Thank you for posting on this. I had a deep pore cleansing facial about three weeks ago, and the clinician told me about carefully tweezing chin hairs. She noticed many ingrowns. I am striving to be super-diligent about exfoliation, and have recently purchased the Triple Berry Smoothing Peel.
BTW: How often can one use the Triple Berry Smoothing Peel? At the present time, I exfoliate with the Micro Crystal Cream three times a week.
Thank you, again.

You can use the Triple Berry Peel once a week if you feel like that your skin needs it. I wouldn’t do more than once a week.

I know this is an old post, but what about electrolysis? Any thoughts on this procedure for removing facial hair?

A lot of people have had good results with electrolysis, so it’s worth checking out.

This was very helpful information. I did not understand why I was suddenly getting more and more ingrowns. Needless to say, hard as I try not to, I have picked at them and right now my chin looks terrible. Is so embarrassing. I always had nice skin. Do you have any magic suggestions for clearing some of this mess up or fading some of the red areas? Thank you.

Hi Donna! Have you seen our Post-Breakout Fading Gel? It’s under ‘problem skin treatments’ and would work very well as a spot treatment! -Renee
